On Anger

On Anger – an introduction to nonviolence’

Sunday 19 January, 2pm-5pm
Friends Meeting House, South Terrace, Hastings, East Sussex, England TN34 1SA

As the government marks the First World War centenary by celebrating nationalism and military values, a new study/action group in Hastings will be examining the power and complexity of nonviolence.

Inspired by the Campaign Nonviolence (CNV) project launched last autumn in the US, Burning Gold will be addressing the three-fold CNV pledge of active nonviolence: striving to practice nonviolence towards ourselves; and towards all others, and joining the global movement to abolish war, end poverty, stop the destruction of the earth and foster a just and peaceful world for all.

Working for social change often involves feelings of outrage at the crimes of the powerful. At this introductory workshop, we will share our ideas about nonviolence and consider how outrage and anger can (or cannot) be reconciled with a commitment to nonviolence. We will be paying special attention to a classic essay, ‘On Anger‘, by nonviolent activist and author Barbara Deming.

The Burning Gold group will meet regularly over 2014 – some events will be public and open, like the 19 January and 9 February workshops, others will be closed, attended only by members of the group. If you would like to become a member of the closed group, please attend at least one of the public workshops, and talk to us there.

Attending a public event does not require any commitment to continue with the group.

Founder members of the Burning Gold group come from Peace News, Hastings Against War and Combe Haven Defenders. The name of the group comes from a line in William Blake’s poem Jerusalem: ‘Bring me my bow of burning gold’.

The second Burning Gold public workshop, will be led by nonviolence trainer Denise Drake:
