Action this coming Saturday 1st October

Inviting all of the Critical Massive to the airport critical mass on Saturday October 1st! Yes that’s right, the day after critical mass London around lunchtime, 470 people have already signed up to cause a spot of trouble to the environmental menace that is the aviation industry! Sign up at reclaimthepower.org.uk for updates of precise time and location to meet.

We will protest the governments plans for major airport expansion at City and Heathrow, demanding that frequent flyers be taxed instead of rewarded, to radically reduce the aviation industry’s emissions to levels compatible with a sustainable future.

We will be a banner-flying loud carnival of bikes and sound systems visiting two places related to the injustices around aviation, and also causing a bit of mischeif – sign up and stay tuned!

* All riders are meeting at midday @ Grow Heathrow, Vineries Cl, Sipson, West Drayton, UB7 0JH (planning to leave by 12:30)

* The bike ride will not go into any areas restricted to bicycles, but will stop off at a few different locations on the route. An action agreement was drawn up to set safe parameters for anyone participating in this mass action, and outline our collective intentions and responsibilities for the day: https://reclaimthepower.org.uk/aviation-flashmob-critical-mass/aviation-action-consensus/

* We’re asking everyone on the bike bloc to WEAR RED to convey how “aviation expansion is crossing a red line” (there will be spare red boiler suits at the meeting point for anyone without red clothes)

* A legal briefing for riders will also take place at the meeting point.

* For anyone on foot, there is also a flashmob bloc which will be meeting elsewhere, and will be taking action at the airport itself.

  1. Thank you for listing the action here! The title has the wrong date, Bou could you change the title to ‘This coming Saturday 1st October’ ? Many thanks

  2. Hi there! THANK YOU SO MUCH for listing our critical mass bike ride on your website!
We’ve realised there some important info that was missed out from the description you were given. Also, we are announcing the meeting place/time today so you could add that in too, to make it easier for riders to join:

  3. 1. #StayGrounded Day of action against airport expansion @ Heathrow Airport
    ============================================================
    Saturday 1st October 2016
    Heathrow Airport
Meeting at 12 noon. See below for bloc locations.

As part of a wave of anti-airport actions happening across the world, including La Zad (France), Atenco (Mexico), Vienna and Istanbul, Reclaim the Power is organising a day of action at Heathrow Airport.

On 18 October the UK government is due to announce at which London airport it plans to build a new runway (reports The Times). It’s a crucial time to be taking action. Tell the government to #StayGrounded in climate science and #StopAirportExpansion.

There will be two blocs: a family friendly creative action (Bloc A) and a Critical Mass bike ride (Bloc B) both meeting separately at midday.

    BLOC A – FLASHMOB
    —————————————————-
This will be family-friendly and inside a publicly accessible airport building. The more you can look like a regular traveller, the more you can integrate into the crowd, and the less likely you are to be spotted by
security! Watch out for the people waving red hankerchiefs, giving the visual cues for precise timings.

Meeting time: Arrive between 12pm and 1pm (we will be gone by 1pm)

Meeting location: Car park of Hatton Cross tube station (Piccadilly Line) to collect a prop and further instructions for where to go next.

    What you will be doing:
    ——————————–
    >> Act 1 – The Die-In – hundreds of us will lie down on the floor at exactly the same time, representing the 300,000+ people who are already dying each year, all over the world, from climate change related causes.

    >> Act 2 – The Frequent Flyer High Polluters Club : Fast Track Check-in desk – a few people will act like the minority of wealthy frequent flyers, who take most of the flights and are driving the ‘need’ for aviation expansion in the UK.

    > What to bring:
Dress as normal as possible, looking like any other flight customer, and don’t forget to bring luggage! If you want to be a frequent flyer, you will need to dress smartly, looking like the high earning ‘binge’ flyers with second homes abroad, who fly the most, without consideration for anyone else.

BLOC B – CRITICAL MASS BIKE RIDE
    ——————————————————
This will be a mass bike ride, visiting a couple of specific locations on the way, including a local immigration removal center. Simply follow the marshals in high vis jackets who will lead the way.

Meeting time: Arrive at 12pm (ride will start at 12:30pm)

Meeting location: Grow Heathrow (Vineries Close, Sipson, UB7 0JH) to collect a prop and to start the ride.

What you will be doing: Riding in a RED convoy with hundreds of others, representing the red line that airport expansion crosses, if we want a socially just and liveable planet for all. Wear red and bring your bike.
