13th May: Next Bristol Radical Bookfair

BASE Infoshop and a number of other BASE collectives and user groups will have stalls at this Saturday’s next Bristol Radical Bookfair.
The Bookfair runs from 11am to 3.30pm at the Exchange Bristol, at 72-73 Old Market, Bristol, BS2 0EJ, and is once again hosted by the wonderful Active Distro.

Active’s FB event promises:
“You’ll find new and second hand titles, kids books, novels, calendars and more from radical publishers, zine makers and activists. Plus stalls from local campaigns groups and free talks in the basement room. AND vegan hot dogs, cakes, snacks, hot drinks, and beers available from the Exchange cafe. AND there will also be a small, self supervised kids space with books and toys.
The bookfair is FREE to attend. Well behaved dogs are welcome.”

So come on down and stock up on your beach/festival/summer reading, along with a range of other pamphlets, patches, badges, t-shirts, music and more (bring cash and cards) – see you there!

Whatabout Wednesdays Mini-cafe Was To Continue to 31st May – But Now Closed

Update 11th April: sadly and due to a combination of unforeseen circumstances, the Whatabout Wednesdays mini-cafe has had to close down early…so 5th April was the last one. We hope it will return for winter 2023.

Original article: BASE’s Whatabout Wednesdays vegan mini-cafe will now run on until Wednesday 31st May 2023.
Originally conceived as an alternative welcoming space over the cold winter months, offering awesome but cheap food (free to those with no money), our cafe volunteers have decided to run it until the end of May. We hope it will return next November for another winter session.

The mini-cafe not only provides an awesome soup, cakes and hot drinks each week. It also makes available the full range of facilities at BASE, including the cafe & events rooms, the library, toilets, Info Shop & free info, and a good wifi signal.

There’s a range of regulars and new visitors each week, and a laid back atmosphere, plenty of chatting, and quiet spaces if you prefer that.
All are welcome at this cafe, between the hours of 11am to 5pm.

Whatabout Wednesdays Is Back!

Into 2023 we go, and Base social centre’s mini-cafe – Whatabout Wednesdays – is back every week from 4th January, from 11am to 5pm.

Whatabout Wednesdays is an alternative welcoming space for everyone local – neighbours, community, strikers, doleys, students, rebels & friends.

We offer a very cheap basic cafe comprising: a soup & bread (£1); cakes (£1); and hot drinks (50p) – but nobody is turned away if they’re skint.

There’s also Base’s range of free facilities: wi-fi; radical reading library & workspace; campaigns info; toilets; or just hang out and have a chat.

Plus there’s Base’s Info Shop to purchase all your radical presents – books, pamphlets, stickers, postcards, t-shirts, diaries, music cd’s.

Got any ideas for other things that could be on in the building? Come and speak to us!

Note: Base’s ground floor cafe area and one toilet are wheelchair accessible, but the 1st floor is not.

Whatabout Wednesdays!

Note: From 2nd November – 21st December and then 4th January until further notice

Base social centre opens it’s doors every Wednesday from 11am to 5pm, offering a mini-cafe, drop-in & welcoming space.

In the Cafe – hot drinks (50p), soup/bread (£1), cake (£1).

Spend time in our free Library; check out Free Info; browse our Infoshop for books/pamphlets/music to buy; use the Wi-fi; or just hang out and chat.

#DontPayUK BS5 group will also have a drop-in from 11am-2pm in the Cafe, with campaign news, flyers & posters, and info on where to get support.

Plus…surprises! Speak to us if you have ideas for any ok.

BASE Movies Nights! Get Involved!

Are you interested in presenting a movie/documentary/video/a talk at BASE film nights? Any chance you’d also like to cook for BASE Cafe? :) You can do either or both, as you like (no need to cook!)

The event runs every Sunday. Dinner served at 6, film/even starting at 7 pm. If you are interested, would you put down a few dates that you’d like and the activity you’d be up for: either film/event (write down the provisional name) or cooking or both.

The idea is to have a fun and relaxing social time that will bring together the interested community to watch movies/documentaries together and have discussion about them. It is an opportunity to look at the variety of struggles and topics that different activist collectives in Bristol focus on and have it as a space to highlight some issues or discuss topics. The screening material can be explicitly political, a documentary, but also more mainstream/not explicitly political thing.

The BASE film nights collective will create a poster, will do advertising, provide technical support and physical space, and facilitate the screening and discussion. You would provide the screening
material (if you don’t have it, we can help finding it) and come to the screening, you will have the floor to say a few words about your collective and why you chose this film and then take part in the
discussion.

Attached is the poster call out. It would be great if you could share it with your group and join us.

Solidarity!
