Car-ful what you wish for
The street blockaded for the first ever Reclaim The Streets anti-car street party is about to become car-free!
Plans have been announced by Camden Council to start an 18-month trial to pedestrianise part of Camden High St, aiming to rejuvenate it by doing what is a no-brainer on so many levels for any town centre blighted by traffic and pollution.
After that initial Camden Reclaim The Streets in May 1995, numerous RTS street parties were held in towns and cities across Britain and internationally over the following decade.
So it’s taken nearly three decades to get there, though perhaps Camden wouldn’t have got quite so grotty if it’d taken RTS’s suggestion way back then and put people before traffic.
