Chief Pickens and his love of ASU Football: who is picking up the tab?

We know Chief Pickens’ LOVES ASU Football; it is pretty apparent due to his regular attendance at nearly every home ASU game. However, what has us concerned is his very frequent road trips with the ASU football team to attend their away football games, which also includes traveling to ASU’s end of season bowl games. Our question is this: what entity provides him with the funding to go to all the away football games? Does the money come from the police department budget, or does the money come from the athletic department?

Either way, you’d be hard pressed to find another major university sending its POLICE CHIEF to every football game, home or away. Other major universities–Ohio State, Wisconsin, Michigan State, and USC, to name a few–send one or two OFFICERS to away football games (this includes bowl games as well).

It speaks volumes about Chief Pickens’ priorities when he bends over backward to attend every football game, yet removes himself from his own department’s advisory board (which is designed to fix the problems that are crippling ASUPD).

This is an edited version from the original submittal a while back. However, I feel this is apropos to the recent post: CHIEF PICKENS AND HIS LOVE OF ASU FOOTBALL: WHO IS PICKING UP THE TAB!

Just finished watching the ASU/Utah football game and lo and behold who did I see out on the field at the conclusion of the game? John L. Pickens! You’d think with all the staffing issues and major problems that continue to plague the department, he’d be back at home with the bobble head command staff working the issues and problems.

Nope, instead he’s traipsing about the country spending $$$$! His arrogance and sense of entitlement reminds me of a third-world dictator who couldn’t care less about the state of affairs back home.

It will, indeed, be a sad day if this man is allowed to retire with high-praise from the university leadership for all the good things he didn’t do for the department and university.

That arrogance and sense of entitlement is coming from someone getting paid through public funding. What has this man done for the public? He endangered them through mismanagement.

He heads a police department unable to function because as dictators know, you have to pay your supporters, more pay raises for command, for supervisors, everyone else can dance for peanuts or quit.

This is because high fiving the football team and hanging out with them is more important than running his police department, hanging out with the advisory board, and figuring out why the department is failing.

He’s repeating the same recipe for failure, over and over. Don’t do shit for the little people of the department, they don’t need pay raises, give more money to my golden cadre of loyalists. The troops don’t need a chief that knows what’s going on at their level. Because our police department is so big right?

We continue to lose experienced people, hire inexperienced people, and remain the same incompetant super top agency year after year. Nobody cares as long as they get paid and aren’t ever held accountable for anything. Has anyone heard of a police department offering paid overtime to cover regular shifts for officers and dispatchers for years?!?

I used to to think Crow cared about growing this University, but now I know those plans didn’t include the police department meant to keep it safe, only appear safe with a big three story empty building. The same thing his previous department was criticized for, nobody on patrol!!!

Chief J.P. gets 160,000 a year, more than any city police chief in Arizona. The Arizona State University grows and grows as this chief is asleep at the wheel of a broken, top heavy police department with no patrol presence. Officers are responding to calls like firemen, without staffing to proactively fight crime.

Like a dictator pimp Chief JP doesn’t look after his people, ignores them, replaces them, over and over, a continuous talent brain drain wasting millions leaving the campus a smoke and mirrors security game all about appearances.

  5. Supervisor Facepalm says:

You and me as tax payers are paying for the chief to go socialize with the football team. Furthermore we are taking a hit as employees because he’s out playing around instead of taking care of the priority issues at “his” police department. If anyone goes an officer should be making OT money from the trips, but we don’t have officers.
