Just how bad is ASUPD’s current staffing situation? Pretty bad.
Out of the 14 days of the schedule we posted, 7 of those days were below minimum staffing (with Saturday, 02/15/14 having only FOUR officers working. That’s only one officer PER campus!)
The green outlined boxes illustrate either days when officers are moved from their primary campus to cover another campus, or a shift filled by an overtime position.
The yellow outlined boxes illustrate days where staffing is below the minimum requirements.
It is also worth pointing out there are a significant amount of officers taking sick/comp/vacation time…perhaps due to burnout? How much longer will the Chief attempt to “fix” the staffing problem at the expensive of his employees?
All the meetings that have been transpiring on the third floor have yet to bring about any actual change to the current staffing problems. ASUPD is currently operating on a “best case scenario”; if something very serious were to happen, ASUPD wouldn’t be able to function.
Chief Pickens, you owe it to your officers and the community you “serve” to fix this problem; running your employees into the ground will only cause MORE of a staffing crisis as more people seek to leave ASUPD.
All these issues are a result of the toxic atmosphere at our police department. Nobody sticks around for a reason, specific reasons that are of no concern to management of ASU Police or management at the university, Michael Crow, Morgan Olsen, Kevin Salcido have all proven they couldn’t care less about how this police department is run.
ASUPD management’s only plan of action is to simply hire more people to watch them leave like everyone else. Sounds like the same loser plan that created this crisis in the first place.
Thanks for releasing this information. They don’t want the public, the community aware of the facts. The facts are the truth and allows the public to see through their lies. Don’t release it ahead of time, release it after the week passed. They are complaining about the sensitive material that isn’t sensitive because it has passed and is very public. They need to be concerned about so many other issues and chose this as one. I don’t get it, nobody does.
The actual schedule doesn’t lie, but our so called leadership does. The public has a right to know how it’s paying premium prices for a police department and the protection that implies, but receives a unmanned smoke and mirrors carnival act of protection instead. That begs the answer of what’s being done with all that money?
This is the documentation, the proof of command’s failure to effectively manage a police department. You have these few officers protecting a community of 70, 000 students, maybe a 100,000 public, faculty…what could possibly go wrong with that?

If releasing this schedule AFTER it has come to pass represents a security breach, a danger to the ASU community, then what does it mean when you run, FOR YEARS, a police department full of supervisors with so few officers on patrol to protect this ASU community?
The hypocrisy is amazing, something I have only seen from slickster politicians trying to earn my vote or from career criminals too high to notice the difference. Which one are you?
Thank you for understanding free speech, I learned about this in highschool. Do us all a favor and explain the lessons to our department policy makers. They are having a tough time with this and plenty of other things, they really need your assistance.
We’re back to business as usual, pray nothing happens, and just wing it with less when it does. Releasing this was a good thing.
What’s one officer going to do on a campus when you have a major police situation requiring a squad to handle it safely and efficiently? At best it smells like a lawsuit, or two, or three, or more. At worst, well I don’t even want to think of it. Better hire more police aides! Oh wait, can’t seem to keep them either. I wonder why?
Our staffing is real bad. Every day there is a mad scramble to see who will go where to cover for whomever, one shift having to wait over till the new shift coverage gets there, the begging for people to work overtime to cover regular shifts. If people stop saying yes to overtime maybe some people above us will be held accountable for letting our department go to hell?
