artofactivism statement

the aim here is help understand better the role that art can play in activism / to learn from others and from experience more about the art of activism  – the individual relinquishes expertise to the power of the collective and in doing so the two can move forward together /

the process of creating art is as important as the final product and it is the process that can break down the boundaries between artist and audience – activist and community – protester and passerby / this writing is about contributing to efforts to break those barriers – uniting people in resistance to the status quo through the art of activism

artofactivism’s own projects focus on the creation of playful and antagonistic autonomous spaces (figurative and literal) in which participants are encouraged to engage in subversive behaviour – have fun – and challenge social and relationship structures / we do this in the hope that the freedom of autonomous spaces open up our imaginations and make it easier experimentation and hopefully result in clearer visions of what an alternative future might look like
