Common working shift only on Saturdays

I was with a friend, Mat. He was talking about his problems as usual. He had this job he was not happy with. Then apparently the people changed at work and he was happier.

Then I asked him to get me a job in the company where he worked, and got it. But we only saw each other on Saturdays when we had the same shift. The rest of the week, we either worked in different places or at different times.

The job had to do with putting things in order on a beach. There were more people but we never saw anyone. It may have involved getting into the water.

We were having a passionate conversation, maybe me just giving him some advice. Then an old man came and asked us if we were close friends. I stopped this conversation and explained to this old man that we were close friends but we only met on Saturdays because the rest of the week we had different shifts.

It was difficult to resume our passionate conversation. Also, our boss came and told us the things that needed doing. I spoke to Mat about these things and how to organise our work. He went blank and I thought it was strange.

Then I continued to do the work that needed doing and he came round, but was still not talking much. I wanted to explain to him that he had had a shocking blank time and I told him: “this was like your last time, when you just went blank. You just looked straight and would not interact, would not speak.” And I tried to put my face in the same way that he had been when blank, my vision blurred and from the outside I just went cross-eyed, but I did feel a bit blanked and I was afraid I would go effectively blank so I stopped. He didn’t know that any of that had happened to him, he was not aware of himself going blank. We went on to talk about other things.
