Breaking the Block 3 Curse

Each of the 8 blocks of apartments that makes up Prosfygika has its own unique character. These small idiosyncrasies often come from long term residents, some of whom who have been squatting here for a decade or longer, who lend their own character to the specific part of the neighbourhood that they inhabit.

Before

The end of block 3 is no exception, and its specific reputation is as a troubled place to live. For years, the last six apartments in this block have been home to squatters who have chronic health problems Continue reading

Prosfygika: Challenging Capitalist Modernity

This weekend, members of the Prosfygika community travelled to Hamburg, Germany, to attend the 3rd conference on Challenging Capitalist Modernity. The conference is a bi/annual event that brings together communities and organizations from four continents to discuss and learn from each other on the topics of Democratic Modernity, Women’s Empowerment, Confederalism, and the ideology of the Apoist/Kurdish revolution taking place in Rojava as we speak.

The conference presents an unique experience for militants from Rojava to meet academics studying their revolution (including the surrounding topics of direct democracy, ecology, and women’s liberation), as well as a wide range of groups that are adopting Apoist theory (social and political modes of organization, as inspired by the writings of PKK founder and Kurdish Political Prisoner Abdullah Ocalan) and doing solidarity work in Europe, as well as North and South America. Prosfygika falls into the latter category, as we are a community that seeks to jointly decentralize ourselves, and interact with the outside world as a horizontally-organized collective, as well as providing support for the Kurdish Community in Greece, and pushing for greater support for Rojava in the Greek Anarchist movement. We also see our use of militant insurrection against the Capitalist Greek Nation-State as a show of solidarity with Rojava, and the anti-Capitalist Modernity movement (although, as we found, there are factions of the same movement that shy away from such action).

We held a table at the conference, participated in workshop groups concerning international solidarity, youth organizing, and Jineology (the social science of women that was born out of Apoist thought), and met new comrades from around the world.
As a community, we salute all those who struggle around the world for liberation from Nation-States and Capitalist Modernity, and the movements in solidarity with them.

Antifa March in Ambelokipi and Panormou

Members of the Prosfygika community picked up the call of local antifascist collectives  to join a demonstration against Golden Dawn and autonomous fascists in the Ambelokipi neighborhood on April 12.  Over 100 people, including people from other neighborhoods who came in solidarity marched outside local fascist hangouts and headquarters. The fascists were nowhere to be seen, but locals greeted the march with enthusiasm.

We marched with the message that the streets are for the people, not for pigs and not for fascists! The message continues to reverberate with the people of Ambelokipi, and the organized collectives in the neighborhood.

Sookah Bazookah

She is the first official community dog here. Her first caretaker kept her mostly on the roof or at the balcony. Occasionally he let her go freely and then she was scary, harassing people and dogs and killing cats left and right. One day she found her love — our Asian friend, who stayed here for a while. She simple followed Him all day long and finally moved to his flat. There was no discussion. :-)

For a while they were really happy together. Never in my life I saw such model relationship, especially initiated by a dog. But he had to get back home (I have his promise that he will come back to her if it is ever possible). So we (Me, Natasha and Kita-san) decided to take care of Mooiee-Chi, supported by a group of community members (she needs at least one decent walk every day, preferably jogging).

She is not only a gracious and pretty “DoberWoman”, but also extremely balanced and intelligent young bitch. She has a huge excess of energy, so we call her Sookah Bazookah (Sookah from “bitch” in Polish). But she is willing to learn and cooperate, so we will be working on her behaviour (although I do not expect her to adopt a kitten…).

See her pictures and videos gallery here. And stay tuned for more stories from Prosfygika!

Protesters gave texts and  played music to inform the public about large scale attacks in Syria by the Assad Regime and by US Forces.

Prosfygika has been an active participant in the Assembly Against the War in Syria, and members of the community came down to support the action, and protest the ongoing violence.

ANNOUNCEMENT – CALL SOLIDARITY & DEFENSE FOR SQUATS AND EVERY GROUND OF THE STRUGGLE AGAINST OPPRESSION

On 13/03/2017, the regime’s assault battalions stormed into two occupied areas, the Villa Zografos and a squat housing refugees and immigrants in Alkiveiadou Street. To law enforcement mechanisms and their political superiors, squatters are not separated. Both the social squats, such as Villa Zografos, and immigrant housing squats, as in Alkiveiadou Street and political squats are to be eradicated from the new urban environment.

The new architecture of European states and dioceses militarily imposes oppressive and exploitative regimes. For anyone who does not accept this there is a place in works camps, the social margins, in concentration camps, prisons, or they can be exterminated.

Upgraded operations and designed invasions, similar in type to the Thessaloniki last year, show the unity of objectives and overall planning of the regime. They show the long-term suppression of the plan which involves the whole range of tentacles of state and capitalist machine. With the ’12 invasion in Athens as a guide, arch-executor Kaminis and other dregs of the urban world (institutions, companies, church, cops, judges, media), attempt to plunder what the struggle has won in recent years. The decline of the movement and our internal weaknesses are the appropriate ground for suppression and invasion.

“The squat is one of the truly liberated territories of the social, class and political struggle. They act in an integrated and organic way within the broader social field, social centers and places of political struggle.”

There are both a common reference point for those oppressed and persecuted by the state and capital, and also provide a lively social liberation perspective. Our communities are marching along with the overall movement for the fight against tyranny.

“Today more than ever we need to enhance quantitatively and qualitatively liberated areas and territories to expand their presence to the ground with real social needs, disputes and struggles. The refusal of the illusion of islands of freedom in a world ablaze, the compromises through which the authorities blackmail us, and the illusion that we can continue to exist without constant struggle in our communities against the culture of domination and its mechanisms are basic prerequisites for the overthrow of the material and existential quagmire through subversive self-organization.

Our task in the new period is to strengthen the organic and functional relationship of the liberated-squatted places of struggle… comprehensively with the aim and purpose of establishment of the Community Partnership for defense, coordination, and dissemination in the social field. The full and comradely solidarity is our most valuable weapon. The right and the rage, our most reliable friends. Current conditions of material poverty and human coercion require squats to create revolutionary change and redistribution for improved social conditions. “

Genius Prosfygika Loci

We are not alone here. Our struggle to keep #Prosfygika alive, livable and lively is the continuation of the struggle that lasts almost a century now. This is just a handful of pictures, showing how Prosfygika started and how the community lived through decades of extremely “interesting times”. We, here and now, just carry the torch. We fight the battles that are new and old at the same time. Our colors are more black than red or white-blue, but our enemies are the same: enemies of humanity, enemies of freedom, enemies of history. In brown uniforms, in riot gear or business suits, their aim is the same. And Prosfygika always stood in their way.

Operation Big Leak. Day #1

So, we decided to face The Big Leak.

The story so far…

Some 3 years ago a squatter was trying to do something with the water connection in our block. It is unclear what exactly was his idea and nobody knows what happened. Squatters do not really boast long memory or situation awareness. Enough to say that the popular knowledge is the guy either broke the valve or punctured the water pipe.

As the water erupted, his best idea was to pour enough concrete on it to stop the leak. And then some dirt&gravel. And then some more concrete. Out of sight, out of mind as they say.

Now, I do not really know if anything of that really worked. But when we arrived here 5 months ago, the leak was happily seeping through the whole sarcophagus, growing every week. And it was already considered long-term problem. Continue reading

How We Deal With The Domestic Violence

We not only do geeky things.

Night 1

A lady with a 2yo daughter came from the streets and was assigned a flat in my section (staircase). Few days later her husband has been released from prison and joined her — according to community rules he was her guest, as long as she liked it, but had no rights to the flat per se.

For few weeks the lady was attending community meetings and taking her share of work. The man showed once to introduce himself after he was stopped couple times in the neighborhood and asked who he is.

The previous night, hearing noises typical for violent quarrel we, the neighbors (5 people, men and women) paid them a visit to investigate. Men learned from the husband that the child swallowed 10-cent coin and they were just nervously discussing what to do. In separate room women learned from the lady that the husband takes hard drugs and drinks which turns him violent. Continue reading
