Callout for Submissions

Issue One: Trans Prisoner Day of Action and Solidarity

Zines Against Prisons will be producing a zine ahead of the January 22nd International Trans Prisoner Day of Action and Solidarity as called by Marius Mason: https://transprisoners.net/. In past years we have printed posters and zines to distribute, organised card signing nights and hosted a discussion on ‘what does solidarity for trans prisoners look like?’ This year we decided to create a zine in order to highlight what is already happening in the UK and to help promote January 22nd 2019.

This is a callout for submissions of articles, artwork and more. It could include information about;

  • people’s lived experience of navigating the prison system (including the courts, adult prison, youth prison, detention centres and the probation service) as a trans, intersex, non-binary, genderqueer and/or gender non-conforming individual
  • friends and families experiences of supporting their loved ones through this
  • campaigning and advocating for trans prisoners rights
  • actions that have happened for Trans Prisoner Day of Action in the past
  • the intersections of race and gender and the prison industrial complex
  • prison abolition
  • artwork to use as cards to send to people currently incarcerated
  • information about past or current campaigns

The deadline for submissions is 31st October 2018 and you can email us on againstprison[at]riseup[dot]net.

About ZAP! UK: Zines Against Prisons was setup in September 2018 to create a series on the Prison Industrial Complex in the UK and resistance to it. So much of the writing on prison abolition we are inspired by comes out of the US and there has generally been a lack of publications focused on the prison system in the UK. Our aim is to combat this by documenting and highlighting resistance from the past and work being done by groups now, in order to push for a world without prisons.
