Earth 2800.
It was the year 2800.
And I was still stuck on this planet.
How was I still alive?
Well, it’s a long story. One, that I preferred not to discuss due to the sheer number of nightmares the remembrance caused me.
Humanity had failed to find another habitable planet.
The thousands of rockets people had sent into space all amounted to nothing.
Human beings were stupid. They had wasted so much energy, fuel, time and resources into space missions. They had attempted to settle down on Mars, then on the Moon. They went as far as Mercury and Jupiter. Then ultimately, they gave up.
Quadrillions of dollars had been wasted. Thousands of lives had been wasted in a combined effort to settle the human species on another planet.
There had been a nuclear war. Millions of people were killed.
Over the course of time, the human population was dwindling. Poverty, diseases, and pollution accelerated the death of mankind. In the end, most of the human beings were infertile.
The pollution had rendered large areas of land barren. Large forests disappeared within a few centuries. There was drought and famine. Millions died from hunger and starvation.
Air pollution further reduced human life significantly. In many countries, the air had become completely toxic and unbreathable, thanks to the nuclear fallout accompanied by the pollution from several centuries of human carelessness.
Human beings obtained oxygen from water. But that had become scarce too. The rivers dried up, the ocean had become too polluted and underground water reservoirs had been exhausted.
The Arctic and Antarctica were invaded. The snow was melting away rapidly. This was the only source of clean water. Humans drilled down into the icy continental shelf to obtain fresh clean water. It was then processed to obtain oxygen.
Then, artificial intelligence took over the world. What had began as an experiment had turned into mankind’s worst nightmare.
The intelligents, as they called themselves, took power and control over the entire population.
They created robots, clones and farmed humans.
By some miracle, some clones developed a conscience. They were immediately blacklisted and labelled as rogues. The rogues were hunted down by the intelligents using the robots, clones and humans. Ultimately, many of them ended up scattered in small groups across the world.
The population of clones and robots increased massively. They outnumbered the human beings. In an effort to survive, human beings did everything they could to please the artificials.
