For our reading this week, we will be reading the zine “Support.” It is available as a PDF here.
A brief description of “Support:”
In a time when sexual assault and abuse are an increasing problem; even in so-called radical and punk communities, and when most women have been sexually abused in one way or another, Cindy Crabb (Doris Zine) brings us a document showing ways to prevent sexual violence and support survivors of sexual abuse. The zine helps to define consent, some letters that Cindy has received, listening, talking about sex, power dynamics, comics by Fly, and much more! A crucial resource that reads much like a regular issue of Doris.
For next week we are going to be reading the following:
For next time we will be reading the zine “Gender Roles in Conversation.”
The idea is that we will hopefully use the zine to include self-reflective
discussion based on our experiences.
We’ll also be checking in on any updates for personal goals shared last time.
And finally, we’ll discussing the name of our “group,” so please think of
some ideas over the course of the week.
Last time we had a few discussions about the direction of the group, so for this coming session we will be thinking about possible names (mens group is so boring) as well as having a rotating facilitator with hopefully more structure.
In terms of reflection we are going to be going through scenarios listed in “the Philly Dudes zine” as well as trying to incorporate some of their other activities.
Also we talked about coming to this coming meeting with personal goals to work through, and have the group form some sort of support role specifically related to individually detoxing from patriarchy in our lives
We’re reading the zine “The Philly Dudes Collective – Year One (And A Half)”
Also, we’re supposed to go to come to the meeting with some type of personal goal we’re working on related to how patriarchy influences our actions. An example might be “i’m going to work on holding the door open less for women” (or something like that — obviously that’s super simple). The idea is that verbalizing it might offer a way to check in on progress in the future and/or to help support each other.
The reading we will be discussing this week is titled “Ex Masculus: Critical Reflections on Pro-Feminist Men’s Groups.”
A writeup of the zine on anarchist news can be found here. The zine is available for print
and for reading online.
We decided last time to read the following:
