Achievements

The #reviewUWE campaign demands an independent review into the repression — including the involvement of high-ranking university staff through intimidation and intelligence-gathering — of peaceful student protests against the ‘UWE arms fair’ held on campus on 20 November 2013.

The main achievements of this campaign are listed below:

November 2014: student journalist publishes an article about #reviewUWE campaign in the paper version of the WesternEye (UWESU’s newspaper) entitled “UWE fails to act after repression of student protest”.

21 October 2014: Released a statement from protesting student whose foot was run over by a car during unsafe and repressed protests 20 November 2013.

16 October 2014: UWE’s Head of Marketing quoted in UWE’s student newspaper stating: “The activists’ call for an independent enquiry last November was not supported at the time”. However, neither we (‘the activists’) nor the lecturers’ union (who now also support the campaign) have received any reply from UWE about our arguments and demand.

15 July 2014: Meeting of UWE’s Board of Governors. The draft minutes of the meeting published on UWE’s website suggest that our campaign was either not discussed, or discussed confidentially as item G14.07.4.

14 July 2014: UWE UCU sent a letter to UWE VC and UWE governors asking for independent review. No reply received yet.

12 May 2014: University Paper Bristol publishes a news article about our campaign entitled ‘Students up in arms over protest treatment’ (page 4).

23 April: campaigners speak about the #reviewUWE campaign on Ujima radio (community-based radio in St Pauls, Bristol)

14 April (after the demonstration): UWE confirms release of students’ open letter to university governors.

14 April: National #reviewUWE, #GDAMS and #copsoffcampus demonstration at UWE Bristol. Check CAAT’s report, our photo report and our press release announcing the event.

10 April: First national media to cover our story! Our headline in The Morning Star: “UWE students try to halt campus arms fair”.

8 April: Babbling UWE Head of PR claims that UWE knows nothing about students’ concerns, and that UWE Students’ Union (UWESU) did not report to UWE.

3 April: Launched the #reviewUWE petition.

2 April: Sent an extended open letter to UWE Governors demanding a transparent, comprehensive and independent review.

12 March: Sent an open letter to UWE VC demanding a transparent, comprehensive and independent review. UWE VC ignored us.
