Current Issues Affecting The Network

22-23rd October 2012

There will be some downtime over these days due to works in a flat the connection goes through.  We’ll try to minimise the impact as much as possible.

13th October 2012, 1am

It wasn’t the previous rogue router, but another user nearby – it appeared to be a Denial of Service attack.  We’ve tracked it down without doubt to their flat, have emailed them and unplugged their cable.  It seems like it was misconfigured devices.  All works now – with any luck that’s the problem that’s been plaguing us all for a while solved for good.

12th October 2012

The rogue router user has reconnected himself somehow – we don’t yet know if the current problem is to do with that, or if someone else.  We have ‘packet storming’ – to deal with this, we’ve taken down much of the network, until we can trouble shoot where it is. Sometimes it feels like someone’s trying to mess with us and our time!!

5th October 2012

We’ve physically cut off the rogue router, so hopefully that should be the end of it. There do however appear to be intermittent minor ongoing connection issues.  Please hit reload a few times, or come back to it in a minute or two – that seems to work fine for now.

4th October 2012

Rogue disabled at least for now – and  figured out where it is.

1st October 2012

Intermittent problems for some due to rogue router again!

31st July 2012

Two problems were solved today, but which caused a bit of downtime for part of the estate – we had to reroute since a cable between streets across Leaf Street had gone down, and an iffy plug powering a hub was made better.  New network on it’s way – can’t wait!

19th July 2012

The Belkin wireless router is back, but this time the person has locked it down so we can’t turn off the part that is breaking the rest of the estate. It’s not giving you internet, please unplug it so everyone else can have there internet back.

18th July 2012

Someone has plugged a Rogue dhcp server into the network, a Belkin wireless router modem (at 192.168.1.3), we were able to login and turn off the DHCP server part of it so it stopped bringing down the network and I changed the wireless access point name to ‘rogue’. We had discussion about wether to ‘brick’ (i.e. break the device) as we’ve had problems with Belkin before but decided we couldn’t as Belkin is a popular router and we couldn’t be sure it was always the same person.

17th July 2012

There was a problem with the branch of the network after Caes hub, after that was unplugged the rest of the estate up again. Sadly the three people coming off that hub remain off while we investigate.

1st July 2012

We’ve got the rest of the estate back on (except 2 people who we’re in touch with).  It was a problem with one hub!

29th June 2012

We’ve managed to get Rockdove and the odds-side of Hunmanby back on.

26-28th June 2012

An unknown problem has been majorly disrupting the whole network since late last night; we’ve not as yet managed to track it down to solve, though we have tried various things so far.  It may well be that someone’s created a loop, causing ‘feedback’ – we’ve so far laid new cables & replaced hubs to narrow down where the problem is, and will continue.  We’re waiting for access to lofts and having time to clamber about.  Please bear with us – we know it’s frustrating.

20th May 2012

Some people are experiencing problems connecting.  We have looked at the network and there doesn’t appear to be any problems at our end, however we think it maybe an updating problem on Windows 7.  If you are experiencing problems, please try entering 192.168.1.3:8000 into your browser and you should be able to connect that way.

13th May 2012

A couple of users have viruses, and we have contacted them to help them sort it out.  This is causing some intermittent problems for others, as these viruses try to spread!   You should always have up-to-date virus protection software on your computer, and update the virus definitions.  Search online for suitable (open-source) solutions for your operating system – if you need advice, email or call us.  Thanks.

24th April 2012

Apologies for the patchy service over the weekend – we’ve had two rogue devices (wireless access points) on the network causing problems.  We have manged to change their settings so they don’t create issues for people – however, the owners might change them back at some point!

16th April 2012

There have been problems with speeds around the estate over the last
week.  Whilst we are trying to figure out what the problem is, and to make
sure everyone gets a fair share of download speed, we’ve throttled
everyone’s speed to 3MB.

7th February 2012

Much of the estate was down for half a day due to key hub fault; replaced.  We’re looking forward to the new rewire so these problems are a thing of the past.

30th January 2012

Fault in network; sorted in time for last minute tax returns!

4th December 2011

Pigeons have nested in one of our router boxes which has caused problems on Rockdove, all it’s sorted now (nice to spend Sunday unto your elbows in pigeon shit). But need to disconnect to give it a proper clean. Anyone who is still not back online after 6pm please let us know.

29th September 2011

Network had no internet connection for half a day!  Our service provider had – without any notification – cut us off due to BT claiming to have turned up when they hadn’t.  As soon as the accounts department reopened their end, we could get reconnected.  It’s all sorted now and won’t be happening again.

We have lots of exciting plans for the next few months that should make the service even faster and more reliable, we’ll keep you posted as soon as we are able to say more.

23rd August 2011

Network down for half an hour due to electricity problem.  Fixed.

1st November 2010

Short downtime for some of the estate on Saturday 30th, resolved now. Recent problems with rogue DHCP server (probably someone’s Netgear router incorrectly configured) affecting people’s connections also seem to be solved.

2nd October 2011

If you have a router or wireless access point attached to the network that you’ve recently connected, please check your settings or contact us for help.

Someone has connected a DHCP server to the network, which is breaking connections for many people around the estate. It is probably that someone has simply pressed ‘share this connection’ in windows XP. There is no need to do this the connection is already shared.

The number of people this is stopping getting connected is pretty random, depending on which address server responds first, so do spread the word (obviously email’s not the best way to spread info about network problems ;-) ).

1st August 2010

  1. Your friendly neighbourhood techies were at work late Friday night to fix the problem on Hunmanby and Humberstone that’s been gong on from Wednesday night onwards. One of the people that hosts our hubs is away for a couple of weeks and there was no power to the hub, we have put in a backup supply and all should be fine now. We can only apologise for the inconvenience.
  2. We’ve just put in a new firewall, which is why you’ve had to login again today. We hope this will make everyone browsing faster and safer.
  3. There is now a new machine for community use in the TARA office at 26a Humberstone Ave, it is available for use to anyone and internet usage from there is free.

21st April 2010

Someone’s computer is infected with a spambot, so we’ve had to disable a port – this means that if you use a mail client (eg Thunderbird) to send your email, you’ll have problems sending. Webmail continues to work fine. We’ll re-enable it when we’ve figured out who it is – PLEASE check your computer for infection; you’ll have received an email with our recommendations. Contact us if you need support.

1st April 2010

This is not an April fools gag!. The entire network is down and we are working on resolving the issue. The exact cause is unknown at this time, but we hope to have the problem fixed over the bank holiday weekend. *Update: 2nd April* We have identified the issue and we hope to have the network restored at some point today.

March – April 2010 (Ongoing until Bramhalls have completed their work)

Due to Bramhalls working all over the estate, intermittent outages have occured, and may continue to occur until the works are complete. This is entirely beyond our control, but thankfully, these outages have only lasted a couple of hours.
