Always good to know what the police can and can’t do (or, rather, what they should and shouldn’t do) within the law and the powers given to them. This can be useful when attempting to negotiate conditions they want to place on a protest, when being threatened with arrest and wanting to know which of you is in breach of the law and in various other situations.
While it may not always get you out of trouble (and you should not assume that it will!) it can make you more confident in your actions and words and sometimes make an officer back down when they realise they are the ones in the wrong.
