Looking for an email account or mailing list? We recommend ...
Aktivix provide email accounts and mailing lists. The services are free, but you may be asked to make a small donation towards their running costs.
Anyone can sign up for a mailing list. But, you can only get an email at aktivix.org though a friend of a friend basis - ie, if you know anyone with an aktivix.org email or in any of the following groups or networks, noborders, indymedia, hacktionlab, climate camp & social centre network.
Riseup provide email accounts and mailing lists. The services are free, but you may be asked to make a small donation towards their running costs.
You can sign up for an email account at Riseup.net via a webform. It is quicker if you can get 2 invite codes from friends who already have email accounts there. Click here for more information.
Or you can sign up for an email with Autistici here - http://www.autistici.org/en/join/sign-in.html
Why we recommend them
- They do not monitor your use of email. This means that if anybody asks them about how you use email, they will not tell them because they do not know. Aktivik and Riseup are working to implement the Providers' Commitment for Privacy.
- Commercial providers can delete your account at any time. They often take the side of the more powerful groups such as authorities or corporations. Aktivix will do what they can to take the side of activists and campaigners.
- Commercial providers are, ummm, commercial. They offer you a free email account, but they still make money out of you. They do this by sending you targeted advertising. And, even if you have an advert blocker, they still scan the content of your emails and sell that information to marketing companies.
The secure email providers mentioned above also encrypt all messages sent between themselves, meaning that an email from an Aktivix user to a Riseup user is encrypted both as you compose it and when it travels between Aktivix and Riseup having been sent. Any Gmail (or similar) users on your mailing list are the weak link and you could recommend a more secure email account.
