The Internet works by connecting different computers togther. One computer, the client, asks a question. Another computer, the server, gives an answer.
As a simplified example, when you type kittens.com into you browser, here's what happens:
- Client (your computer): Please send me the web page called kittens.com
- Server (a different computer): Here's the web page called kittens.com
- You: Can now see the web page called kittens.com
